Superman hasn't been relevant in a long while. Sure, we had CW's Superman and Lois lighting the way, but there really is nothing like a Superman blockbuster to take the fight to the darkness we're wallowing in now.
It's why I'm both cautiously optimistic and nervously excited for James Gunn's Superman. While we wait till it hits theatres on July 11, at least I have toy tie-ins like the new DC Multiverse Superman & Krypto Deluxe Theatrical Edition to tide me over. Let's see if the toy is as super as we hope!
I've always passed by these in the toy aisle, but I appreciate how McFarlane Toys does their toy packaging. The no-frills box showcases the toy and all the tchotchkes it comes with very well.
After some finagling with plastic ties, here is the new Man of Steel in all his glory—and his little dog too! I mostly collect Marvel Legends, so Superman here is too big to be displayed beside Captain America. But I admit the 7-inch scale really allows for a more imposing figure, even if it isn't my cup of tea.
The scale also means there's more room for details, and I love me some fine details. Every inch of DC Multiverse Superman has sculpted detail that looks screen accurate (as far as I can tell), and the likeness to the actor David Corenswet is close enough without looking like somebody else entirely.
While I'm not a fan of the New52-inspired costume, the bright colors and the return of the trunks more than make up for it! My only issue is the paint, with my figure missing a few dabs here and there.
I really wanted to like the articulation of my first DC Multiverse figure, but a lot was left to be desired. The range of motion is often hindered by the sculpt, and the most ironic is the head being on a very limited ball joint, so Superman himself can't "look up."
At least the cape is articulated. DC Multiverse Superman's cape is a red cloth with bendy wires running down the sides, so you can pose the iconic red cape to whip and whirl as you please. Cloth capes like these are easy to get wrong, but here it really feels like part of the figure without looking like a cheap doll.
I paid premium for the Deluxe Theatrical Edition of Superman, and the price point comes with some accessories not found in the regular release. Let's look at them one by one.
First up is an accessory that's a must for a Superman figure: two open palms to give the Man of Steel a more aerodynamic profile when flying—or to smack bad guys with some old-fashioned Klurkor.
Next up are some swappable face plates. One has red paint emanating from the eyes to simulate Superman using his heat vision, one with a stern face with brows furrowed, and the other is a more neutral face.
DC Multiverse Superman comes packaged with an already neutral face, so I don't know what the other one is for, unless it's a manufacturing error I'm not aware of. Regardless, the faces are thankfully painted well and are easy enough to swap with each other. And the likeness to the actor is still spot-on in all of them.
And now we come to the best (ish) accessory DC Multiverse Deluxe Superman comes with: Krypto, the Super-dog! This shaggy mutt is cast in white plastic and has no articulation, with its only claims to relevance are a bit of paint on its collar and a cool-looking cloth cape.
But really, who am I to say no to a Good Boye such as this?
There's also a collectible trading card and stand packaged with the figure. They're nice to have, but not really must-haves. I hope these aren't part of the premium price I paid for!
I've always wondered how DC Multiverse figures looked like beside my other toy lines, and the disparity is huge. If you're looking to buy this Superman to fight your Robert Downey Jr. Iron Mans, you might want to do a raincheck. But if you're looking for a Superman figure that truly stands out from your display, this is the toy to get!
It's been a while since I bought an action figure due to hype, and I'm glad I gave in. The DC Multiverse Superman & Krypto Deluxe Theatrical Edition is a cool-looking figure despite the issues, and it just feels right to have a Superman on my desk to remind me hope is on the horizon.
There are no words to express how excited I am for James Gunn's Superman movie. The world is the scariest it's ever been, and we need a Superman that's colorful and unabashedly hopeful to bring us out of it, be it in movie or action figure form!
I hope you found this review helpful. Where are you watching Superman? Let me know down in the comments. Stay safe out there and thanks for reading!
