Hasbro Marvel Legends Series Secret Wars Iceman Review

Of all the X-Men characters made into Marvel Legends, Iceman often gets shafted. I guess it's hard to make an action figure that looks like ice in a believable or satisfying way. But with the new Marvel Legends Series Secret Wars Iceman, Hasbro is closer to getting it right.

Let's see if my X-Men team finally got the Iceman it deserves!

Marvel Legends Secret Wars Iceman is on the new pinless male body cast in translucent plastic to simulate his heroic ice form. It's see-through enough that you can see the pins and joints, which makes for a cool visual (pun not intended).

There is no paint to speak of on the figure save for the face printing tech and the X on Iceman's belt. I would have liked to have some sort of white or blue highlights to break up the monotony. But since this is a retro wave, Hasbro is going for the same colorway as the original Secret Wars Iceman toy, so I'll give it a pass.

We don't get a lot of expressive Marvel Legends faces, so it's nice to see Iceman with a big, toothy smile! The see-through plastic makes the expression hard to see, however.

Regardless, the new Marvel Legends Secret Wars Iceman is still a significant upgrade from Hasbro's earlier Iceman figures. I can finally retire my shitty gummy Iceman!

Iceman is articulated well thanks to the new body mold, with butterfly shoulders, double-jointed arms and legs, and more for maximum posing. The joints are thankfully nice and tight so he can hold poses very well.

For accessories, the new Marvel Legends Secret Wars Iceman comes with plenty. First is an alternate angry head. That already puts Bobby Drake here a step above all the bland and stoic Marvel Legends faces of today!

Second is a cute little snowball for when Iceman wants snowball fights in June! It's a tiny little plastic ball the size of his fist, and the alternate open hands included can gingerly hold it.

Iceman is also packed with a "shield" that's a reference to the original Secret Wars figure by Mattel, which also included one. It's bright orange with a lenticular card featuring an image of Iceman that changes into his warmer alter-ego, Bobby Drake.

It has the same clip and peg seen in Captain America shields so you can display Iceman wielding it on his forearm or pegged into his upper back. A nice inclusion for mint-on-card collectors for the nostalgia, but for me this one gets donated to my little cousins.

And now we come to the biggest selling point for me: ice effects for Iceman! He comes with two ice blasts and an ice "slide," all cast in translucent plastic painted with white highlights. We can finally display our Marvel Legends Iceman in his natural element!

The figure pegs into the ice slide easily, while the two ice blasts clip onto Iceman's wrists to simulate him blasting off in his own ice-cold way. That is, if you don't mind the blasts pointing straight down.

Which is baffling to me. Iceman has always made ice slides by blasting ice in front of him instead of under his feet. I thought maybe I'm just being stupid and there's a way to clip these blasts the correct way (exacerbated by the fact that there's no instructions in the packaging), but they're really designed this way. Strange and disappointing.

But not the figure itself. Even with that ice blast hiccup, Marvel Legends Secret Wars Iceman is a cool (sorry, can't help it) figure that's nice to have and visually interesting. I for one am glad my OG X-Men team is finally complete with all my ideal figures!

I got my figure from Amazon, and he should be available in select retailers like Gamestop. I hope you found this review helpful! Thanks for reading and stay frosty out there!
