We're pushing towards the last quarter of the year and Hollywood isn't even close to done releasing new stories to watch on the big screen. From wicked horror to wicker lovers to Dunesday blockbusters, this year has been the most exciting time to be a post-pandemic movie watcher! Here are the new movies I can't wait to see this year, and let me know which ones here (or ones that aren't) you're excited for too!
RESIDENT EVIL
Premieres September 18
Director: Zach Cregger
I've proud to say I've been dipping into the horror genre real deep as of late, and Zach Cregger's Weapons was one that stuck with me, so it's a pleasant surprise to know that he's taking on an adaptation of one of the most popular zombie survival games of all time. This time though, he's doing it without any familiar characters or monsters. Instead, it's Austin Abrams as a medical courier fighting for his life in name-dropped Raccoon City. Close enough for me.
VERITY
Premieres October 2
Director: Michael Showalter
It's Anne Hathaway's universe, we're just living in it. I enjoyed her turns in The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street this year, so it's just proper to see what else she can do as Verity Crawford, a bestselling author struck by an accident, leaving behind an unfinished novel. Josh Hartnett as her husband Jeremy and Dakota Johnson as the ghost writer he hired to finish Verity's novel round out the cast, which is sure to be a twisty one.
DIGGER
Premieres October 2
Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu
You know you're in for a wild ride when a movie stars Tom Cruise in heavy prosthetics and turning his acting slider to scene-chewing 11. The trailers have not helped me understand the movie one bit, but it's an Alejandro G. Iñárritu dark comedy with Tom Cruise as an oil baron-turned-only hope to save the world--I don't need any more convincing.
WICKER
Premieres October 23
Director: Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson
When you hear about a lonely fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) asking her local basketmaker (played by Peter Dinklage) to weave her a husband in the form of Alexander Skarsgård, you just know you're in for a wild ride. Will we see human-on-basket action and copious amounts of wood *wink wink* on the big screen? October can't come soon enough, pun intended.
GODZILLA MINUS ZERO
Director: Takashi Yamazaki
It's Godzilla. It's the sequel to one of the best Godzilla movies of the decade. It's a monster movie filmed for IMAX. Of course I'm there on opening night. Japan's favorite monster son returns for more mayhem, with both familiar faces and new characters to terrorize.
HOW TO ROB A BANK
Premieres November 13
Director: David Leitch
David Leitch, the stuntman who made his directing debut on the first John Wick, is back for something more timely and close to home. Nicholas Hoult stars as a social media-savvy Robin Hood-type bank robber, with Zoë Kravitz as his former flame and a hacker hired to find him. From the trailers, it looks like the perfect lampshade over today's social and political climate.
AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY
Premieres December 18
Director: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
I'll be honest, I found Marvel Studios' post-Endgame era sorely lacking in direction and spectacle (save for some surprise bangers like Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps), so I'm going against the grain in saying I'm not too hyped for another Avengers movie. Still, it's got the Russos back directing, and RDJ, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and a plethora of familiar faces from the original X-Men films sharing the screen for the first time. If anything, the novelty will get my butt in the seat.
DUNE: PART THREE
Premieres December 18
Director: Denis Villeneuve
If you think I'll miss the last installment of one of the most important sci-fi trilogies, you're sorely mistaken. I've already read and re-read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune in preparation for this, and I can't wait to watch Timothée Chalamet play Emperor Muad'dib at the height of his powers. I also can't wait to see Robert Pattinson's Scytale and Anya Taylor-Joy's Alia Atreides finally brought to life on the big screen—and I am definitely watching this on the biggest screen possible.
WERWULF
Premieres December 25
Director: Robert Eggers
It's not enough that he scarred me for life with one of the scariest vampires ever, now Robert Eggers is set to traumatize me again with another one of my favorite monsters in fiction. The usual suspects are here (Lily-Rose Depp as the suffering wife and Willem Dafoe as a hunter—again), and the Middle Ages vibe is downright dirty. I can't wait to be uncomfortable again!
