Marvel Legends X-Men '97 Emma Frost Figure Review

Seductive. Scandalous. Seriously powerful. Emma Frost has been one of the most enigmatic and dangerous mutants in the X-Men universe. As the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Emma wields her considerable wealth, influence, and telepathic powers in opposition to the heroic X-Men.

It's been a year since the new X-Men '97 cartoon finished its first season, but the hype hasn't died down. It seems Hasbro saw the perfect opportunity to cash in on the goodwill with a new line of Marvel Legends action figures based on the show, and I couldn't be happier.

With my X-Men display in dire need of some iconic villains, I'm glad I snapped up the new X-Men '97 Emma Frost figure. Let's see if she matches the buzz!

One look at the new Marvel Legends Emma Frost and you'll realize we've come a long way from nightmare fuel female action figures. If looks could kill, Emma is a weapon of mass destruction!

As this is based on the X-Men '97 animated show, her figure's aesthetic is more in line with the cartoon's character model. The sculpt is softer, the details simplified, but it still packs a lot of impact. Or at least more impact than a hot woman walking around in lingerie in public settings can have.

The headsculpt drew me to this figure. Hasbro did a great job translating Emma's chiseled looks into toy form, while still keeping it generic enough that it wouldn't look out of place in a "comic book only" display. Her face in particular is strikingly beautiful, with a slight "I'm better than you and you know it" smirk and makeup that befits a White Queen.

The face printing on my copy unfortunately missed by a few micrometers, but it only looks obvious when seen on a macro lens like mine.

The rest of the figure is plain by comparison. The only dabs of paint on what little "costume" she has are on the strings of her corset and the seam lines on her thigh-high boots. The furry cloak she has is cast in blue plastic and spray painted white. The seeming lack of torso articulation is not lost to me, but I'm pretty sure there's a joint inside that allows her to twist and bend. Unfortunately, my copy's torso is stuck, so I have no choice but to pose her standing straight.

But really, how much detail does Emma Frost need? Put her in white lingerie and gloves and Bam!, that's the White Queen right there.

Another peeve of mine are her feet, whose ankle joints are too tight and nigh impossible to fudge to get her standing on her own volition, leaving me no choice but to use a figure stand. Those ridiculously high heels are nothing but trouble!

Marvel Legends Emma Frost can doff her cloak to show off more of her assets and mobility (and make it considerably easier to make her stand!). Aside from the awkward bicep cuts to accommodate her long "gloves," Emma looks aesthetically pleasing under there.

Articulation-wise, Emma Frost isn't breaking new ground. I am, however, glad that they gave her modern Marvel Legends articulation as it makes Emma more satisfying to pose, the aforementioned nonexistent torso joint notwithstanding.

The remaining articulation is adequate in putting Emma in dynamic poses, though I guess I'm biased because she's just a beautiful figure that movement doesn't really matter. All I know is she looks good kicking all sorts of X-Men ass.

Aside from her bulky cloak, the X-Men '97 Emma Frost comes with alternate open hands for your telepathy gesturing needs. My only complaint is that it's supposed to be a gloved hand, yet it has sculpted fingernails visible. Must be some very sheer gloves!

Emma also comes with an alternate smiling head with windblown hair. This face sculpt is just as gorgeous as the default one, and the hair being whipped about gives her some much-needed dynamism. Coupled with her alternate hands and you can pose Emma with a smug hair flip after a wicked retort!

To be honest, I can't ask for anything more. In spite of the minimal detail and paint, Hasbro still nailed Emma Frost's iconic look. Don't let her "basic" appearance fool you—the Marvel Legends X-Men '97 Emma Frost is an alluring action figure that captures the essence of her cartoon counterpart well while still looking right at home in your comic book display.

I love when Marvel Legends does updates on fan-favorite characters. Here's hoping our favorite characters get this treatment next!

I hope you found this review helpful. Thanks for reading and keep on collecting!
