One of my comic book watershed moments was picking up a copy of Marvel's The Ultimates 2 and falling in love with Mark Millar and Brian Hitch's modernizing of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Since then, I've had a hankering for getting good action figure representatives of the team. Now the wait is over, and here I am clearing time from my IRL busy schedule because I've had this review undeservedly sitting in drafts. Is the new Marvel Legends Ultimate Iron Man a must-cop? Let's find out!
The new Marvel Legends Ultimate Iron Man cuts an imposing figure and makes Hasbro's first attempt look like a cheap bootleg. For starters, the sculpt is much more accurate to Brian Hitch's Iron Man art in The Ultimates comics. I also love how the proportions are appropriately chunky as in the comics, and the gold and candy red paint really pops in pictures!
Despite the chunkiness of the sculpt, poseability is no problem for Ultimate Iron Man. Joints are smooth with expressive range and articulation is seldom hindered by the armor. My copy unfortunately has a stuck waist joint which didn't allow me to get satisfying poses, and I'm afraid turning it any more than I did could only lead to a broken figure. Hopefully this isn't the same with your Iron Man figure!
For a $30 toy, I expected a lot more for my money. The only accessories Marvel Legends Ultimate Iron Man gets are some alternate hands. One of which is a pair of open palmed alternate hands to simulate him firing off some repulsor blasts.
The hands have holes in them so you can stick energy effects that aren't even included with the figure. Talk about blue balls, Hasbro.
The other alternate hands are a pair of grasping hands made for holding the miniature "comic" that comes with the figure as an "accessory".
For posterity, Ultimate Iron Man is part of a "Comic Wave," wherein figures in the line come with a tiny plastic "comic book" of the character's significant appearance. It's a cute addition, but it literally adds no value, I'm sorry to say. It's not even an actual comic in that you can't even open it up to see miniature pages! Ah well.
It's not a total waste of 30 bucks. I've been waiting for Hasbro to make good figures of one of the formative titles of my early 2000's comic book fandom, and visual-wise they delivered with this updated Marvel Legends Ultimate Iron Man. It's a good-looking Iron Man toy that's fun to play with and display. Here's hoping his other Ultimates teammates aren't far behind.
I hope you found this review helpful! Thanks for reading and stay safe and informed.
